The Dragonfly Bakery

Natalie Currie, owner and head baker at The Dragonfly Bakery has this soothing aura about her, an elegance which she magically bakes in to her delicious creations.

I have been lucky enough to sample many of these delights and I cannot praise them enough.

When you gaze upon the exquisite confectionery from The Dragonfly Bakery, you may be tempted to think “they can’t possibly taste as good as they look”…well that assumption could not be further from the truth. They taste even better than they look. Don’t believe me? Well there’s only one way to find out ♥

The Dragonfly Bakery can provide you with a cake for any occasion. Birthdays, weddings, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Tuesday! Tray bakes, cupcake bouquets and giant cupcakes are also available.

Whilst Natalie had a spare 5 minutes I thought we’d sit down with a cup of tea, and of course a piece of cake, and get to know a bit more about the girl behind the mixer.

First of all why did you choose the name The Dragonfly Bakery?

“For as long as I can remember I have had an obsession with dragonflies. They are just so pretty. Anyone who has been to my house will have seen them in various forms in every room. They definitely bring me good luck and always show up at important times in my life. The day I found out I was pregnant with Noah being one of those!”

How long have you been baking?

I have been baking as long as I’ve been walking! I can remember being very, very young and standing on a chair in my Nana’s kitchen helping to make cakes.

Can you give us your top baking tip?

Use American recipes…they know how to make a good cake!

Who has been your baking influences? Family members, celeb bakers etc?

My Nana. She taught me to bake. From a very young age she would have me making bread, pastry and cakes. She is an amazing baker and seemed to bake something everyday. I used to go and stay with her in the holidays and I looked forward to helping her in the kitchen. Even now, if I ring her to say we are coming over, I can guarantee when we arrive she will have baked something for us.

My biggest celebrity influence is probably Ina Garten. She’s an American cook and she is amazing!!

If you were a flavour of icing, what would you be?

Hmm, probably cream cheese frosting. It’s not too sweet and a bit temperamental! Haha 😀

What is your favourite cake to make for the family?

I don’t often get around to baking for my family too much anymore but when I do I usually make chocolate brownies. They are a big favourite in our house. It’s a bit controversial but my son and I like them with lots of custard instead of ice cream. Yum!

Do you think you could bake blindfolded?

NO! It’s hard enough with both my eyes. Imagine the mess!!!!

(We will most definitely be putting this to the test asap) 😛

Natalie runs The Dragonfly Bakery single-handed from her home in Yorkshire where she lives with her husband Jon, son Noah (6), daughter Bonnie (3) and mad dog Gracie (11).

The Dragonfly Bakery  is on Facebook, ready to take your orders 🙂
