I was just watching an episode of Dr Who with my son, the one where he takes Rose to watch the Earth be destroyed by the solar flare…(End Of The World I believe it is aptly named)!
And before they arrive at ‘Platform One’ (the observation ship, for those of you who don’t watch it or don’t care enough to know) :D, Rose is deciding where she wants him to take her.. she suggests 100 years in the future (too easy) they then go on to 10,000 years in the future.. I think.. and The Doctor says ‘You can step outside in to the year 12,005, the new Roman Empire’!
On hearing this for the hundreth time, because that’s how many times I have watched this, it made me stop dead and think! We’re barely even anywhere, as a species I mean…and yes I know Dr Who isn’t real, I’m not mental! I know he hasn’t really visited 5 billion years into the future and watched a solar flare burn the Earth but it’s all plausible to a certain extent and the Earth will, one day, cease to exist!
But it just made me think how small we are in comparison to everything that has happened and that is going to happen.
We’re not even a blink of an eye!
We run around like headless chickens trying to please everyone in our lives and most of the time we try to please the ones that aren’t even the important people. I spend too much time worrying about what other people think when I could be using that energy on making myself happy and actually living life, because quite frankly, we don’t have any time here at all and it’ll all be too quickly forgotten. Here’s the introduction to the film Contact…I think it is amazing, the sheer vastness of everything! It really gives you something to think about…
